Aix-en-Provence, France
A beautiful town where you will undoubtedly eat the greatest cheese in your life and drink copious amounts of wine…. for breakfast!!!
(unless you’re vegan and you don’t drink alcohol)
Look… i normally don’t drink wine.. I usually become sleepy and pass out 30 mins later with an instant hangover! I’m not great company on wine, BUT…. I don’t know if France blesses me with magical tolerance fairies or that the quality of the wine in France is beyond exceptional ( i think it’s the latter) I enjoy drinking wine here and i don’t fall on my face after one glass!
Apparently sulphates that are used to preserve wine is what causes the Asian glow/flush. But so is lacking the right enzyme to digest it … (i got the short end of the stick, thanks ma!!)
We were lucky enough to spend Christmas here with my husbands family and close friends.
Jackie, my husband, spent 4 years of his childhood in this town, so for him it’s like home. He speaks fluent French which is extremely handy, and also pretty romantic/dreamy!
The girls had the best time running around with their cousins, eating delicious comfort food and just being all around spoilt to the max. During Christmas time the town has a selection of carnival rides for the kids, so that kept them happy too!
We also ate the most delicious pizza in town for lunch every second day at Pizza Capri. It’s fast, cheap and easy to eat while walking around the markets! You’ll find fantastic coffee walking around and according to our local friend the best patisserie is called Weibel. I bought a few cakes from there and they disappeared quickly!
Aix also has fantastic shopping. Located in town are Zara, Sephora, H&M, Levi’s, Lacoste, Sézane, Maje, Petit Bateau and lots of cool trinkets + local specialties at the markets. It’s also fun hunting for timeless french linen.
If you appreciate art and art history you will love visiting Cézanne’s studio, which he used in the last 4 years of his life, 1902-1906.
Château La Coste is a 250ha organic winery full of contemporary art from artists and architects. You could spend all day exploring here.
Next time i would love to hike up the Sainte-Victoire Mountain for the most spectacular view, one that inspired Picasso and Cézanne!
Winter or Summer Aix-en-Provence is a beautiful town to visit or stay in! :)
